Curricular Orchestras
Concert Orchestra - Grade 9
A non-auditioned ensemble that introduces freshmen to the high school orchestra experience. This class provides important formative experiences in musicianship. Students will be expected to develop their talents and ability through completion of technique classes and performances. Members may participate in Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Private lessons are highly recommended.
Concert Strings - Grade 9 (Auditioned)
An auditioned group for students with more refined playing skills. Most students take private lessons outside of the school day. Students will be expected to develop their talents and technical ability through completion of technique classes and performances. Many of its members also participate in the solo-and-ensemble festival.
Symphonic Orchestra - Grade 10-12
This is a non-auditioned ensemble that builds upon the formative experiences in musicianship of Concert Orchestra. Students are expected to advance their skills and musicianship through completion of technique classes. Members may participate in Solo and Ensemble Festivals and other valuable enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Private lessons are strongly encouraged to further enhance the playing ability and enjoyment of music. Concert performance is required at a minimum of four concerts.
Symphonic Strings - Grade 10-12
A non-auditioned ensemble for students with highly developed string playing skills. Students will be expected to further refine their technical abilities and musicianship through the participation of weekly technique classes. Concert performance is required at a minimum of four concerts. Many members of the Symphonic Strings take private lessons and participate in solo-and-ensemble festival and other co-curricular music ensembles. Membership is determined by recommendation of the instructor.
Chamber Orchestra - Grades 10-12 (Auditioned)
An auditioned string ensemble which periodically utilizes wind and percussion students from the Wind Symphony. Emphasis is placed on literature specific to the string ensemble. Students will be expected to further refine their technical abilities and musicianship through the participation of weekly technique classes. Private study on principal instrument is strongly recommended. Concert performance is required at a minimum of four concerts. Members may participate in Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Participation in concert performances is required. Membership is determined by recommendation of the instructor.
Chamber Strings - Grade 9-12* (Auditioned)
Chamber Strings offers the most advanced orchestral experience through the study and performance of college level works for string and full orchestra. This select string ensemble utilizes the most advanced wind and percussion students from the Wind Ensemble. Students are assigned to chamber ensembles for technique class. Due to the nature of part assignments, there is a strong emphasis on individual preparation for rehearsals and performances. Private study on principal instrument is strongly recommended. Chamber Strings performs at a minimum of four concerts.
*This is an UPPER level ensemble; only a few selected freshmen (based on HIGHLY qualified auditions) are accepted into this ensemble each year.
