MV Jazz Info
Jazz at MV is the Extra Curricular Instrumental Jazz Studies program at Metea Valley High School
Students will experience jazz music by performing, listening, watching, and reading about the various aspects that make excellent jazz musicians.
Students will be selected for a Jazz Ensemble that represents their reading and performing ability at the time of the audition. Attendance at our clinic session is required for all students that wish to audition. At the clinic, instructors will review jazz musicianship, theory, improvisation, and listening which will prepare the students to audition to the best of their ability. Without attending these sessions, students would not be accurately placed into the appropriate ability level. The audition will consist of playing etudes and jazz ensemble music individually for the directors in a 5-10 minute time slot. The audition materials will be handed out at the first jazz clinic session.
Students that wish to join the Jazz Ensembles at MV should check to make sure that they can attend all rehearsals and concerts which are printed on the reverse side of this sheet. Rehearsal and concert schedule is posted also on the meteamusic.org website. Should a student not be able to attend concerts or rehearsals, an instructor may remove the student from the ensemble due to the fact that the student cannot commit to the full scope of performing with the group. If an absence is necessary for reasons of sickness, emergency, etc, the student and parents are required to notify the director as soon as possible. Employment at a job and homework are not reasons to be absent from a rehearsal. Participation at rehearsals and performances is a key component to having a group that can trust each other and rely on each other when making music.
Parents, you can help - Parents, you hold some of the keys to success for your child when it comes to their music education. One of the greatest things you can do for your son or daughter is to supply them with the funds to buy music. Specifically, recordings. If you are able to, please allow your students to use a web based program such as iTunes to download recordings of their favorite Jazz Bands, and Jazz Artists. We can work with the students on a weekly basis, but outside of these jazz rehearsals, they should be filling their minds with the sounds of great musicians, great music, and quality recordings. As they grow older, they essentially develop a “library” of music that they can use for reference when studying music on their own. Afterall, the ultimate goal of being a musician is having the ability to “figure it out” on your own and then apply what you learned to a group setting where you can actually MAKE music. We will supply the students with some recordings, but please make the purchase of recordings available to your child. The investment returns music creation that cannot be assigned a value!
